Our Why

Education

In the riverine landscapes of Majuli, education is often the first casualty of uncertainty.
Annual floods, geographic isolation, limited infrastructure, and socio-economic challenges disrupt schooling for thousands of children every year. For families belonging to indigenous and marginalized communities, access to quality education remains uneven — not because of lack of aspiration, but because of lack of opportunity.

At Ayang Trust, we believe education is not merely about classrooms or exams.
It is about creating safe spaces where children are seen, heard, and encouraged to think, where learning connects to their lived realities, and where schools become anchors of stability even in times of crisis.

Our education programmes exist to ensure that no child’s future is defined by their geography — and that learning remains a source of joy, curiosity, and dignity.

THE HUMMINGBIRD SCHOOL AND HOME

The Hummingbird School is the flagship education initiative of Ayang, operational even before Ayang itself was formally established. The school was built from the ground up in the quaint village of Kulamua, Majuli through the collective effort of 19 Mising villagers who came together to support Bipin (an IITKGP alumni), Ayang’s Founder, driven by a shared hope for a better future for their children.

Today, the Hummingbird School and Home provides high-quality education from LKG to Grade 10 and a safe residential space to children from rural and flood-affected communities, while reimagining what education can look like in a remote corner of the country. The school is rooted in context-based education, guided by the principles of leadership development, lifelong learning, and critical thinking. It nurtures confident learners who are encouraged to ask questions, think independently, lead with empathy, and grow into active contributors to their communities. The school’s approach is inquiry-driven and aligned with NEP 2020, placing the child, their context, and lived realities at the heart of learning.

PROJECT SEED (SEEDING ENQUIRY, EMPATHY,  AND DIALOGUE)

The Hummingbird School’s approach highlighted the need to reach more children and support their learning journeys where they could imagine, explore, and read not just in their own languages, but beyond. During the pandemic, this need became even more urgent, and it became clear that learning could not be limited to the classroom.

This realization gave rise to Project SEED, a community-centered initiative aimed at bringing the culture of reading and children’s literature closer to children of remote and flood-affected villages. In partnership with the community, Ayang helped establish libraries in villages where the communities themselves provided the space. Ayang supported the initiative by distributing books and learning resources, training local youth as Xopun Xarathi, and mentoring the Library Management Committees (LMCs) to run the spaces effectively.

These libraries grew into more than just places to read. They became spaces where children, youth, and families gathered sharing stories, learning together, and celebrating their culture. From reading camps to cultural celebrations, each library became a place full of curiosity, creativity, and connection.

By keeping the community at the center, Ayang and the villages of Majuli built a network of libraries that belong to the people themselves, places where children and young people continue to explore, question, and grow.

SCHOOL LIBRARY PROJECT

Built on the learnings and experiences of The Hummingbird School and Project SEED, Ayang has witnessed firsthand the transformative power of primary language instruction and children’s literature in strengthening language learning. Through these initiatives, communities have warmly embraced libraries bringing books into shared spaces and promoting a culture of reading among children, which has significantly supported the development of their literacy skills.

Encouraged by this positive response, Ayang initiated the School Library Project in 2025 with the vision of deepening language learning for children in government primary schools across Majuli District. The project aims to establish library corners with excellent book titles in partnership with 200 government schools, creating joyful, accessible spaces where children can read, explore stories in their mother tongue, and develop a lifelong relationship with books.

CHILDREN’S LITERATURE DEVELOPMENT

The power of literature has time and again shown that stories can shape young minds, develop empathy and help children discover themselves and their world. Stories help children discover not only the world around them, but also themselves, their roots, and the communities they come from.

While many libraries and schools in the region house various books on different themes, there is a critical gap: the lack of quality children’s literature in local languages. Recognizing the importance of home languages in early learning, Ayang saw this as a barrier to inclusive and meaningful education. To bridge this gap, Ayang has been working to make quality children’s literature accessible in local languages. In partnership with the Eklavya Foundation, Bhopal, Ayang has co-published acclaimed titles translated into Assamese and Mising, and created original titles, retellings of regional folklore curated, retold, and edited by children and community members from Majuli.
