Living with the River

Community Resilience

Majuli, the world’s largest river island, is shaped by the rhythms of the Brahmaputra.
Each year, the river brings both life and loss — nourishing the land while also flooding homes, schools, and farmlands. For the communities of Majuli, floods are not rare disasters; they are a recurring reality that disrupts education, livelihoods, and everyday life.

At Ayang Trust, disaster management is not a one-time response. It is a continuum of care — rooted in preparedness, immediate relief, and long-term recovery — built alongside the communities who live with the river year after year.

Ayang’s disaster response work is grounded in empathy, speed, and local knowledge.
Being based in Majuli allows us to respond quickly and effectively when floods strike — working hand in hand with local volunteers, youth groups, and community leaders.

Our approach focuses on three interconnected stages:

  • Immediate relief during floods

  • Rescue and safety support for affected families

  • Long-term resilience and conservation to reduce future vulnerability

Through each stage, our goal is simple: to protect life, dignity, and hope.

Emergency Relief &
Food Support

During floods, access to food becomes one of the most urgent challenges. Roads disappear, crops are destroyed, and families are displaced to embankments and temporary shelters.

Flood relief support

Food, Clothing & Essential Supplies Distribution

Ayang Trust mobilizes rapid food relief for flood-affected families by:

  • Distributing dry ration kits and cooked meals

  • Supporting community kitchens during peak flood periods

  • Prioritizing children, elderly persons, and vulnerable households

These efforts ensure that families have access to nutritious food during moments of extreme uncertainty — offering not just sustenance, but reassurance that they are not alone.

Floods often wash away everything families own — clothing, bedding, utensils, and personal belongings.
Ayang conducts cloth and essential item distribution drives to help families restore basic dignity and comfort.

Relief kits typically include:

  • Clothing for children and adults

  • Blankets, mats, and hygiene essentials

  • School supplies for children when possible

By responding to immediate material needs, Ayang helps families regain a sense of normalcy in the aftermath of disaster.

Rescue & Evacuation Support

In severe flood situations, safety becomes the first priority.
Ayang works closely with local volunteers, boat operators, and community networks to support rescue and evacuation operations — particularly for children, elderly persons, and people with disabilities.

We believe true resilience lies in protecting the land, restoring ecosystems, and strengthening community preparedness.

Conservation & Long-Term Resilience

These efforts include:

  • Assisting families in reaching safer locations

  • Supporting temporary shelter arrangements

  • Coordinating with local authorities and relief agencies

Because our teams are embedded within the community, response efforts are faster, culturally sensitive, and guided by trust.

Our long-term efforts include:

  • Conservation and afforestation initiatives to reduce erosion

  • Supporting sustainable land-use practices

  • Promoting community awareness on flood preparedness and climate adaptation

  • Integrating disaster resilience into education and livelihood programmes

By addressing environmental degradation alongside humanitarian response, Ayang works towards reducing the long-term impact of floods on life and livelihoods.
